A few words about scar care
... because a perfect result is our goal
The natural healing process of wounds and scars is different for each person. Our gentle suturing techniques and your scar care greatly contribute to the best possible outcome. We are constantly working to further improve our delicate and modern surgical procedures - for your beauty and safety.
- After discharge from our treatment and removal of plasters and bandages, if small crusts and moist areas are still present, the scars should be cleaned daily using a mild perfume-free soap or washing lotion. They should also be treated twice daily with a very thin layer of neutral fatty cream (Bepanthen® wound ointment, Vaseline, neutral perfume-free body lotion). Please cover the scars loosely with a bandage and clean dressings from the pharmacy if there are still moist areas.
- Scar massages after surgical procedures, such as breast augmentation with implants, can have a positive influence on the healing process during the first year after the operation. However, a gentle scar massage should begin after the scars have healed completely, when they are dry and free of crusts. When doing this, make small circular massages with the fingertips 2-3 times a day for 5-10 minutes, applying light pressure along the scar.
- Consistently protect the scars from sunlight during the first year. To do this, use a sunblock or sun cream with a high protection factor (SPF 50+).
- Complete maturation of the scar typically leads to soft, pale and flat scars. This process can take up to 2 years. Sensitivity or numbness in the scar area is temporary and improves as the scar matures and eventually disappears completely. Rarely, however, these can also remain permanently. Unfortunately, it cannot be avoided surgically in every case.
- To support faster healing of the scars, a preparation containing silicone gel can be used after complete crust-free healing, either as liquid gel or plaster. A silicone gel (Dermatix-Gel®, available without prescription in pharmacies) should be applied 2 x daily with a very thin layer on the scars and left to dry for a few minutes. It will form a thin, invisible film on the skin, which can be removed again when showering.
- Alternatively, a silicone gel plaster (Scarban®) can be cut to the length of the scar and glued on, which must be reapplied daily after showering. The same patch can be used for a few days. Both the liquid gel and the plaster can be prescribed based on the individual case. The period of application is at least three months and the treatment must be performed consistently in order for it to be successful. Please contact us if you have any questions about this.
- If, during the scar healing process, there is increased itching, burning, increasing redness of the scars, as well as a proliferation and/or hardening of the scar tissue, there may be an excessive scar tissue formation (known as hypertrophic scar or keloid). The predisposition to form hypertrophic scars and keloids is often genetically determined and cannot be influenced. If the scars develop as described above, special treatment is necessary. Please contact us about this.
- Wound healing disorders (wound infections, abscesses or seromas) usually occur within the first few days to weeks and manifest themselves through increased pain, an unusual swelling, redness, fever or chills, as well as through increased or sudden emptying of secretions from the scar or wound. If such a wound healing disorder occurs, please consult us or a co-treating doctor immediately. This can be effectively treated, but should always be under medical supervision.
Please always contact us in case of doubt or questions! We wish you a safe and pleasant healing process!
