Most women have heard about it and many women suffer from it - unpleasant dents and retractions of the skin on the buttocks and thighs. Cellulite affects more than 80 percent of all women between the ages of 25 and 60 worldwide, depending on the study. Many of these women feel their quality of life is affected by their cellulite and would like to do something about it.

The variety of supposed miracle cures are immense. The beauty industry makes billions of dollars a year selling expensive cosmetics and lotions. There are also ultrasound and vacuum therapies, special massages, thermal wraps and other special procedures to counteract cellulite. And they all have one thing in common: the lack of scientific proof of actual effectiveness.

The reason for this is simple: none of the treatments mentioned fight the actual cause of cellulite, only its symptoms. The origin of these cellulite dents lies far below the surface of the skin, in the connective tissue.  Connective tissue strands, which in women are arranged perpendicular ("columnar") to the skin surface, pull the skin inwards. This results in visible retractions of the skin, which are called cellulite. The grid-like structure in men ensures they never suffer from cellulite, even if there is a large increase in fatty tissue.

1. How does cellulite develop?

Cellulite is caused by lattice-like connective tissue strands that run through the fatty tissue or more specifically, the fat cells of the subcutaneous tissue, and are connected to the epidermis. In women, these connective tissue strands are delicately structured, stretchy and run perpendicular to the skin surface. They are also arranged at greater intervals compared to men, where the connective tissue strands tend to be horizontal and are much more interconnected.

Due to female estrogen, typical fat deposits are found on the thighs, hips, bottom and belly. The fat chambers lying under the skin push along the fine connective tissue strands to the skin’s surface. Similar to the quilting seams of a mattress, indentations appear on the skin’s surface which are responsible for unattractive dents. For these reasons, women are affected by cellulite.

2. Is it possible to counteract cellulite through healthy nutrition or sports?

Dents on the buttocks and thighs, which are typical for cellulite, are caused by shortened connective tissue fibers in the subcutaneous fat tissue. Nutrition and exercise have little influence on these genetically and anatomically determined structures, but they do increase blood circulation and promote metabolism. This is positive for the body and health and can at least contribute to an improvement in the skin’s general appearance and connective tissue.

3. How does cellulite treatment work with Cellfina®?

After a detailed consultation on your Cellfina® treatment against cellulite, one of our specialists for plastic and aesthetic surgery will carefully mark the areas to be treated. The skin and subcutaneous tissue will then be given a local anaesthetic during this outpatient treatment. Then a sharp cannula is inserted through a small incision, with which the cellulite sources, i.e. the connective tissue strands of the subcutis or subcutaneous fatty tissue, are carefully cut through (subcision).

The treatment takes 45 to 60 minutes and the downtime for patients is very short. There may be slight swelling, bruising and sensitivity to touch or slight pressure pain in the treated areas. Sports or heavy physical strain should be avoided 24 hours after treatment. The effects will be visible within a few days. Permanent results will be seen after 6 months. Normally, only one treatment is necessary.

So far, Cellfina® is the only treatment method that effectively counteracts the cause of cellulite.

Cellfina® is the only minimally invasive therapy concept to date that has European CE certification and U.S. FDA approval and for the first time effectively treats the primary cause of cellulite. The FDA is considered the strictest in the world with the highest requirements for product safety.

Even the length of the success period has been approved by the FDA and CE standards - 96% patient satisfaction for three years from several hundred patients. This means that patients rate the method far better than any other cellulite treatment on the market.

We are pleased to be one of the first official Cellfina® expert teams in Germany to offer this novel method.

Aftercare following a Cellfina® treatment

The treated areas will be covered by your doctor with an absorbent gauze, bandage or compression garment to prevent bleeding, swelling and/or bruising after the treatment.

You should not take a shower until the day after the treatment and you should also skip bathing for several days after the treatment. During the healing process you should avoid UV radiation (sunbathing, solarium).

The following side effects may, or may not, occur after a Cellfina® treatment:

Your doctor will have informed you comprehensively about the known side effects and will have explained the pros and cons of a Cellfina® treatment in detail. If you observe side effects not listed here, please contact your doctor immediately. Tissue formation takes place over the next few weeks and can create a feeling of tightness and hardness under the skin, which should subside over time.

The use of antibiotics before, during, or after the Cellfina® treatment is at the discretion of the attending physician. After the first few days of treatment, pain may occur, which can generally be relieved with low-level painkillers. A change in diet is not necessary.
